Hi! My name is Harley, writer of the monthly Kidz Korner article. This month’s topic is my church’s grand Christmas presentation! Every year for decades, Idlewild Church has put together a spectacular theme, set, and script. The production features the cast, choirs, orchestra, and choreographers. Plus, the kids (grades 2-5) and students (the latter being middle and high school) get to participate, too! It’s a big deal, with thousands of people every performance watching the stage, lights, and screens in the sanctuary.
The presentation is performed in five exciting and exhausting shows, with two on Saturday. The students ate and played games together during the break between the matinee and evening performances. That was enjoyable, especially when my dad brought us a giant bin of board games from the house! The sixty or so middle and high schoolers performed a specific student medley, with different dances to accompany classic Christmas songs. First was Up on the Housetop, which was turned into hip-hop (I participated in this). Afterward were a partner dance for This Christmas, a boy band dance, and choreography for “Baby, Please Come Home” and “All I Want For Christmas.” The various instruments in the orchestra really helped bring everything to life!
I also performed in the caravan, where wise men came to see the boy Jesus and give him gifts. Everyone had amazing costumes, portraying Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Being up on stage and having costumes and props is fun and all, but it’s not the most important thing. That’s not why we volunteer our week for rehearsals and everything needed to prepare for the shows. We do it so people can come and hear the Gospel in a new and fresh way, maybe even for the first time.
I’m excited to do the Christmas presentation again next year! And for next to nothing, you can come next December and watch this fabulous drama on stage!
