The Lodges of Idlewild
Taking on the role of family caregiver for a parent may be gradual, as your parent starts to lean on you more over time, or it may happen suddenly, if your loved one has an accident or sudden illness. Regardless of how it happens though, even the best-prepared people may become overwhelmed at all the demands and the energy it takes to be a caregiver.
You may feel at times like the gravitational center of your family’s universe, caring for the many and varied needs of elderly parents, teenagers, a spouse, a career, pets, a home (or two!) The list is exhaustive, and the accompanying feelings can be equally exhausting. Let’s face it: it’s hard – no, it’s impossible- to do it all and to be everything to everyone.
If you find yourself experiencing the following symptoms of emotional overload, it may be time to accept some much-needed respite care from The Lodges Senior Living in Lutz rather than continuing to shoulder the burden alone:
Anxiety: Feelings of concern or worry are common when providing care for an aging parent, particularly when faced with the unknown and situations that are out of our control.
Guilt: “Am I doing enough? Is there more I should be doing? How can I think of myself when Mom and the kids need me?”
Anger: Anger can quickly manifest from fear and anxiety, and can sometimes be misdirected on a loved one – resulting in more feelings of guilt and anxiety. A vicious circle.
Grief: As a loved one ages, a sense of loss for the person who once was can be powerful. And watching a loved one continue to decline only exacerbates the feelings. It’s important for family caregivers to know that this state of life as a “sandwich generation” caregiver does not have to be – nor should it be – a solo journey. Accepting help does not mean that you’ve failed or that you’re not capable of providing care to your loved one. In fact, accepting help may be one of the best things you can do for both of you.
Partnering with trusted senior living provider such as The Lodges in Lutz and Ange’s Senior Living and Home Health is one way many have found not only relief from these stressors but a group of other people who can provide support. With Day Program services, respite services, residential services, educational seminars, and home health services, The Lodges in Lutz is here to help.
