How have you been handling your health and healthy habits and routines lately? I know for some it’s easier to do, and for others, it’s a little harder. Regardless of which it is for you, the world seems to be shifting back and forth between traditional medicine recommendations and holistic natural wellness practices.
Here’s a thought that occurred to me recently: Why is it that the majority of people regard holistic natural practices as a last resort? By then, it may be likely that the person’s condition is irreversible. What could have been done to prevent that particular health condition? Doesn’t it make sense to consider holistic natural health and wellness practices should become a part of everyday life? So, let’s reverse the majority’s way of thinking about it. Traditional medicine should be considered as the last resort, after practicing the natural way first (When I see the long list of disclaimers with new pharmaceuticals, I tend to run the other way).
Here are a few tips to consider to either get back to or keep up newfound healthy practices:
• Schedule it – block off time on your calendar, set reminders, or whatever you need to ensure you have time for exercise, prayer and meditation, planning and cooking healthy meals, drinking more water, getting more sleep, or whatever habits are your top priority.
• Don’t make it a choice – it’s easier to create a habit when you don’t have to make a conscious decision to do it, but instead just know that you always “xyz” at a certain time.
• Pair it up with another habit – along the lines of not making it a choice, you can tack the new habit onto something else that’s a regular part of your routine.
• Make it a priority – if something is getting in the way, ask yourself why, which is the higher priority. Knowing you should do something vs actually valuing it enough to commit to it are very different things and can determine whether you’re successful with your health goals.
• Accountability – for many it’s easier to ask a friend or family member to help hold you accountable to your goals than to do it alone then you can cheer each other on.
Here is one more thing to consider: God created our bodies to have the built-in ability to heal by itself. We just need to give it a nudge every now and then. He also gave us the natural medicine that is in the foods that we eat, from natural sources (not bio-engineered or GMO). And the clean water that we drink. If that should fail, then we look to our medical professionals for the needed help. If everyone made this a habit, our health insurance costs might not be so high.
