May is a month bursting with celebrations! From honoring the incredible women in our lives on Mother’s Day to paying tribute to the brave souls who sacrificed for our freedoms on Memorial Day, there is no shortage of reasons to rejoice. And let us not forget the vibrant fiesta that is Cinco de Mayo!
But here is a fascinating twist: Cinco de Mayo, often associated with colorful parades and festive gatherings, is not quite the national holiday in Mexico as it is in the United States. It is actually an American-born celebration, crafted by and for Latino communities across the United States.
While many think of Cinco de Mayo as a Mexican Independence Day, it actually commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In Mexico, it is celebrated mostly in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is not as widely observed across the country as one might expect.
However, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a cherished occasion to celebrate Mexican culture, heritage, and the contributions of Latinos to American society. It is a day filled with lively festivities, delicious food, joyful music, and a deep sense of community spirit.
When you are looking for a place to take your family to celebrate this month, go to Don Julio’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine. The family-owned restaurant has been serving the community since 2018. Cinco de Mayo celebrations include a DJ and entertainment at both locations and specials on house margaritas and Mexican beer!
