I heard of a gentleman who wanted to be better disciplined in his finances so he asked his friend to keep him accountable.
The gentleman is an avid golfer and his friend saw him one day hitting golf balls in the pouring rain. He went to his friend and said, “You don’t lack discipline, you lack motivation.”
Like the gentleman above, every year one of the top 5 New Year’s resolutions is making better financial decisions.
We always start with good intentions and motives but when March of the new year rolls around, we’ve already abandoned most of our resolutions, and our goals are 3 months behind. Why is that?
May I suggest that motivation has to be the driver. Is your motivating factor strong enough to continue your goal?
Hi, my name is Andy Whitten and I’m a licensed financial advisor. I’ve been giving financial advice for over 10 years and enjoy helping people achieve their goals.
This year I will give you some financial guidance to help keep your motivation strong. These tips will range from planning, savings, investing, and retirement.
To start, I’d like to give you 3 suggestions when creating your financial goals.
1. Write them down. Statistically, people who write their goals have a higher success rate of achieving them. It will help clarify the goal if it’s written down.
2. Ask yourself “why?” Why do you want to accomplish this goal? Then ask yourself why again. If you can continue to answer the question “why,” you will be able to examine your true intention and determine whether the goal is worth pursuing.
3. Make sure it’s measurable and attainable. Giving yourself criteria to measure, such as SMART goals, (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Oriented, and Time-Limited) can make it very rewarding when you see you’re on track. It also motivates you to continue.
This is just a start for creating your financial goals. If you have suggestions on financial subjects you would like to read about, please email me at andy@pfgprivatewealth.com. I look forward to sharing with you.
