Hi! My name is Harley, writer of the monthly Kidz Korner newspaper column. Last month, the American Heritage Girls troop FL0529, which I’m a member of, camped out for the weekend at Hillsborough River State Park. The worst part of the trip was the setup and breakdown because there were so many things to do and complicated things to figure out.
We had to calculate how much each person should raise their pole of the tent. At the pop-up tent over the future food station, we had to figure out how many holes appeared on the bottom of one person’s pole, which was four. If the others had three, they had to raise their pole to make it even. That night, when we had hotdogs for dinner, the leaders had to divide the hotdogs among nineteen girls, and the night after, tacos were precisely rationed.
If the world didn’t have math, we would likely all be dead. Buildings would collapse, planes would crash, prices would go berserk, and people wouldn’t be able to buy or sell or even calculate how to grow their food! Even computer code, called binary, is made up of 1s and 0s. Even the snake I held at Nature’s Classroom has math. Everything has math!
My favorite number is pi. It represents the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter; the symbol is π, the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. The number starts at 3.14159 and goes on infinitely. I’ve tried memorizing some digits of the number and have achieved eighteen. March fourteenth is Pi Day, because it is the fourteenth day of the third month.
I plan to host a numerical celebration around that time. Many trillions of digits of it have been discovered, and it’s infinitely useful. God is infinite, too, and He’s better and more important than just a number. If you believe in Him with your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you’ll have eternal life in heaven one day, where everything is perfect, including perfect circles. Bye! I’ll see you next month!
