Dance Floor Depression
The devastation of Hurricane Helene poured onto Hurricane Milton has changed the face of dance in this area unlike any of us have seen. Since 1934 the Ballroom/Dance Floor at Gulf Port Casino was host to many Swing, Tango, and other dance enthusiasts; they would meet up for friendly events and fun. The day after Milton the photos started surfacing and many were mourning their favorite spot to dance. Gulfport Casino was flooded.
Volunteers had already been working on the damages from Hurricane Helene, and then the waves of Milton came crashing in. With previous Covid and economic challenges to the scene, dance floors had become rare for dance instructors to even find, let alone pay to work. With thousands of dancers ready to get out and relieve stress through movement, I have a feeling dance will be bouncing back.
I will be praying for some fantastic sponsor of the arts to call me and help us all get back to moving again. We wish all the studios dealing with these changes blessings and volunteers to help start over. Together, we will pray and dance our blues away!
