We all face challenges in our lives, especially from stress, depression, and anxiety. While they say about 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life, 5 out of 5 people will face some level of mental health challenges to overcome.
As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so this is a great time to think about being proactive in caring for your mental health.
A few tips to improve your mental health include:
- Identify and experience your feelings instead of bottling them up or suppressing them. Research shows that all of our feelings are valid and expressing them in healthy ways is good for our mental health.
- Practice self-care that includes eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, exposure to sunlight, and incorporating relaxation practices are all helpful. Treat yourself kindly, like you do with your loved ones.
- Creating routines that build in time for self-care and your daily tasks not only ensures that you are scheduling what allows for things important to your mental health, but also can reduce stress and anxiety because you have a plan and routine that can ease the worry and decision fatigue. Having a do-able plan can be life-giving for many.
- Build connections with people around you, because far too often people who are surrounded by others still feel alone and they don’t realize that others feel that way too.
- Most importantly, spending some quiet time in prayer can be most comforting. This is something that ought to be considered when planning a self-care routine. It’s good for the soul!
Remember, it’s actually a selfless act to take care of yourself in this way. To exercise some self-care and self-respect is a way of showing gratitude to God for our blessings.
Here’s to your health! And blessings to you all!
