We use the term “hot” to express many different ideas. Sometimes people are described as “hot” meaning they are good looking. Cars are also “hot” especially fast cars, sports cars, or exotics. The DOW can be “hot” if it is rapidly gaining points in the markets, and let’s not forget the “hot” seat if somebody is in trouble. Words from previous generations may seem archaic to us and our cool terms may make no sense to the generations to come. But words matter.
Your words can be like knives that cut people to ribbons emotionally or they can be like a soothing oil bringing comfort and peace.
Words can be tools or weapons. Pain or joy are literally felt by our unexpressed words we call thoughts. Inner words can be loud even in silence and yet a whisper can break your bones.
The Bible declares that God’s word is: “forever settled in heaven,” gives direction, and brings understanding and revelation about things we didn’t know about. God’s word is mighty and powerful, but so are yours. You can shape your future by your words. The people in the exodus from Egypt said they would die in the wilderness, and they did, but Caleb said he would not die but take the land he was promised and so he did.
I am not advocating the power of positive confession or thinking to alter the universe, but I am encouraging us to let the Word of God have a lofty position of upmost importance in our lives. After all God spoke the universe into being and when Jesus explained to his disciples about how the kingdom of God works, he likened his words to seeds. Just like a seed planted in the ground brings forth the fruit of that seed, so the Word of God is like a seed planted in our hearts and it also brings forth its fruit in our lives. In that same teaching, Jesus warned his followers to not let the devil steal his word out of their hearts. No wonder your greatest adversary is trying to keep you from God’s Word, because he knows that the fruit of God’s kingdom—righteousness, peace, and joy—is the harvest that comes from His word.
God’s word is true, and God said He would watch over His word to perform it. Is God’s word dependable? We have a saying that “a man is only as good as his word.” Is God good? God gave the prophet Jeremiah words to eat and Jeremiah said that they became the joy and rejoicing of his heart. King David declared that God’s word restored his soul, brought rejoicing to his heart, and was more to be desired than the finest gold.
How much value do you assign to God’s Word? I promise you that if you value God’s Word it will produce a harvest that is more desirable than the “hottest” things life can afford.
