Hi! My name is Harley. Sometimes summer can be boring. That might sound crazy, but if you’re not at a camp or with a friend, it can feel like there’s nothing to do. One activity I tried out recently with my dad was making a hat out of a paper bag. We made a replica of Napoleon’s golf leaf crown using a helpful book and a small gold gift bag. Another enjoyable thing to do during the summer is read about history. I enjoy reading, and history is very interesting. Napoleon Bonaparte was a fascinating character. But that is off-topic. The hat gave us something to do for an hour, fashionable headgear, and memories. So if your kid complains that they’re bored, tell them to find a paper bag (which shouldn’t be too hard) and make themselves an ancient Egyptian mask, pioneer bonnet, 1920’s cloche, or a crown. Warning: they may strut around the house wearing it for the next few days.
Even though paper bag crowns and real crowns are cool, they are only temporary. Someone will likely sit on your paper bag hat someday, and real crowns will tarnish and rust. So it’s important to store up treasures in heaven because they will be there for eternity. And, anyway, virtue is a whole lot cooler than a hunk of gold.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
