Important history from our Mom, Wilma Dunn, 90 years young
The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935. When older folks could not work anymore, they needed funds set aside or they would have to be cared for by their family or go to the poor house. “When the old age pension comes to your door, you won’t have to dread the poorhouse anymore. Powder and paint will be the rage and old maids will tell their age. When the old age pension check comes to your door.” The old age pension song was sung after the crash of 1929 and the beginning of Social Security.
The Medicare program was signed by President Lyndon Johnson into law in 1965.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care act was signed by President Barack Obama in 2010 (covering pre-existing conditions).
