IMPORTANT UPDATE: COVID-19 AND YOUR PETS
Sunshine Animal Hospital is closely monitoring the COVID-19 virus to learn the latest developments and their potential impacts on veterinarians, patients and clients and is in regular contact with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
It is important to note that infections disease experts and multiple international and domestic human and animal health organizations agree there is NO evidence at this point to indicate that pets can become ill with COVID-19 or that they can spread it to other animals or people.
What if you get COVID-19?
Out of an abundance of caution, it is recommended that those ill with COVID-19 should limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. Have another member of your household look after your pets if possible. Don’t share food, kiss, or hug them and wash your hands before and after any contact with them.
What if you have to self-isolate?
At the moment, some people who are at risk of infection are being asked to self-isolate for a period of 14 days. Self-isolation means that you should not go out. Dogs that cannot go for walks are going to need to be entertained. Dog owners can use treats for scent games like hide and seek. Tug of war with chew toys works well to keep them entertained.
Emergency Plans:
Everyone should have an emergency plan for their pets, even during the best of times. Pet emergency plans should include putting together an emergency kit. This emergency kit should include: Your pet’s identification (including pet photo), copies of their medical/vaccines records, any medication that they might need and supplies such as pet food and treats, cat litter and cleaning supplies. Remember that if you have to self-isolate you will need an extra 14 day supply of pet essentials including pet food and medications.
We must work together to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community and stay strong and healthy during this time of uncertainty. If there is anything we can do to assist you during this time – or any other time – please contact us at (813) 885-7071.
